Technical basis for a unified classification system for advanced ceramics

Because of the limitations of existing classifications for ceramics, it was proposed in 1986 that a new classification system for advanced ceramics should be developed that was acceptable on a world wide basis. Prime objectives were:

  • Identification and assessment of the issues inherent in developing a classification system for advanced ceramics
  • Establishment of a building-block structure for flexibility of use
  • Testing the coding system using commercial product data
  • Development of a demonstrator, and of mechanisms and institutional links for system implementation

The classification system was devised and formed the basis of the first in a series of Technology Trends Assessments (TTA) issued by ISO.
