STRUCTURE

Overall management of VAMAS is through a Steering Committee (SC) with up to three representatives from each of the members. Although historically the Chairmanship and Secretariat of VAMAS has alternated on a three-year cycle between the USA and the UK, any VAMAS founding member country can take on the leadership roles upon request.

The current VAMAS Chair is Dr. Eric Amis, Deputy Director of the Materials Science and Engineering Laboratory, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), USA. The present Secretary is Dr. Stephen Freiman, also at NIST.

The pre-standards research activities of VAMAS are organized into technical committees called Technical Working Areas (TWAs), which are overseen by the SC and led by International Chairmen. The SC is responsible for policy, program planning, approval of new TWAs and projects, appointment of TWA chairmen and monitoring the progress of the TWAs.

Management of the research activities of the TWAs is vested in the TWA chairmen and project leaders within the TWAs, but each TWA has a member of the SC who functions as the SC liaison to the TWA.

Potential participants in existing TWAs and those with an interest in the output of the TWAs should contact the relevant TWA Chairman.
