TECHNICAL WORKING AREAS

The VAMAS technical committees, called Technical Working Areas (TWAs), are at the center of all VAMAS activities. This is where the work is done. Typically, international collaboration takes place to provide an agreed-upon technical basis for test method development and, using round robin intercomparisons, the test methods are checked to ensure that consistent results are obtainable at different laboratories. Since the inception of VAMAS, 32 TWAs have been set up, covering a wide range of pre-standards research needs for the application of advanced materials. Some TWAs have completed their work and are no longer active. Currently there are 15 active TWAs, the most recent being TWA 32 on Modulus Measurements.

Over 500 individuals from many research groups including reseachers from outside the original founding countries have participated in over 80 individual projects. Lists of all active projects and finished projects are available. Many adopted standards on advanced materials and others in various stages of development have benefited from collaboration through VAMAS. Many of the TWA projects have led to the modification or introduction of new national, regional, and international standards for advanced materials.  Copies of the latest TWA Reports can be found at TWA Reports.

Requests to establish a new TWA or a new project within a new or existing TWA should be submitted to the VAMAS Secretary and accompanied by a completed Activities Initiation Form. This form must contain sufficiently detailed information to justify the request. A copy of the Activities Initiation Form is available from the VAMAS Secretary, stephen.freiman@nist.gov.
